Orchard Farm School District in St. Charles, MO, embarked on a $5.5 million energy savings and deferred maintenance project across three schools, covering 276,000 square feet of facilities.
Key facility improvement measures included upgrading HVAC systems, installing advanced controls, replacing roofing, converting to energy-efficient LED lighting, and switching to natural gas for enhanced sustainability.
One of the most notable achievements of the project was the removal and replacement of 110 rooftop units (RTUs), which was completed in just one day with the aid of a helicopter. The new RTUs contained dual fuel heat pump technology.
As part of the project, the district worked with Spire Energy to install 2 miles of natural gas pipeline to the district, eliminating the need for liquid propane gas. This transition to natural gas further enhanced the district’s sustainability efforts and operational efficiencies.
Construction began in May 2019 and concluded by November of the same year - on-schedule and on-budget. The district celebrates this project as critical step toward enhancing the learning environment while responsibly managing resources and costs.

With precision planning and helicopter support, the team removed and replaced all 110 rooftop units in a single day.
From modernized HVAC and lighting systems to sustainable natural gas infrastructure, this project has revolutionized operations while creating a more comfortable learning environment for students.
